Ash is easily better. Ash starts again with new pokemon in each region, Gary doesn't. So Ash has a variety of Really good pokemon. Gary has a select few Pokemon that he only uses like his Umbreon.

i only seen the orange island arc and the first arc.... so i gonna answer for what i know ash sucks, ash sucks just too much, he never actually won his gym badges .__. he only lost, over and over, and then, cuz he saved some pokemons from the team rocket, the gym leader gave him a second chance, or the gym leader came to tell him, YOU DESERVE THIS! also, he lost D: at least gary had his freaking badges <__< and Ash is easily better. Ash starts again with new pokemon in each region, Gary doesn't. So Ash has a variety of Really good pokemon. Gary has a select few Pokemon that he only uses like his Umbreon. when ash finish the first arc, he found gary at pallet town, and gary told him that HE WAS LEAVING TO GET NEW DISCOVER THE NEW REGION, ONLY WITH HIS BLASTOISE ash re starting with new pokemons thingie, he copied it from gary hahaha all i know from pokemon are the pokemon games and the first 8 gyms + orange islands and remember that gary had better pokes than ash, ash only had the 3 starters, a pidgeot, a kingler, and pokemons that he set free wo da hell set frees his pokemons!?

But in the first season and orange league, gary only won because he got heaps of pokemon and used advantages over the gym leader rather than training the pokemon to be able to win even at a disadvantage.
Like how ash won against Brock. he super charged Pikachu. Or when he beat surge, he used Pikachu's speed. But if you watch the other series he gets better and better. Also Gary admits at the end of season 1 that his style of winning was not the best way which is why he change to be more like ash.
Edit: Because you haven't seen the other seasons you wouldn't know, But Gary doesn't use any other pokemon other than his Blastoise, Umbreon and i think his Electivire (i have only seen it once)
When ash first went to Johto he took all his original pokemon but sent them back later when he got the Johto starters.
Also Gary's pokemon were better because he caught them better, Not trained them better. Like when Ash caught a krabby, Gary had a bigger Krabby but he didn't train it, it was caught that way. Ash's pokemon got MUCH better than gary's because he trained them that way.

Still that was playing to the advantages of the surroundings Which became very important throughout the series
