The chance of catching ANY shiny pokemon is 0.01
quoting sam from the blog:
Sam Otero said... 1 in 10,000 or 0.01%, when a pokemon shows up that can be shiny the game picks a random number from 1-10,000 if it gets a 1 then that pokemon will be shiny. So just because you saw 10,000 pokemon doesn't mean you automatically will see one. You might see one after 5 pokemon or 100 pokemon, it's random

Best place would be route 2, and it would take days, its a 1/10000 chance. Also if i remember right maths predicts only 37% of people will find it before the first 10,000 .... So ... have fun 37% *won't* find it within 10k, 63% will. Still, you're in for a good couple days most likely. The chance of a pokemon being shiny is 1 in 10k (aka 0.01%), but since some pokemon are fairly rare you end up spending even longer waiting for you to even get that chance.

Oops. Arithmetic when tired never has gone well for me. Quantum mechanics and vector calculus is fine, but subtraction, that's hard.
Anyway fixed.

I still believe that entry in the FAQ wasnt updated and is only ment for pikachu, as i only played for an hour after the update and got 2 shinies and I dont consider myself lucky in life.

The not so scrupulous ones who've helped themselves to the code have also confirmed that shinies are indeed 1 in 10k (for all of them, not just pikachu).
The reason that they don't feel like they're that rare is that unlike pikachu who only appears 1% of the time in the first place, the various bugs (and rattata) come dozens at a time with a very high probability on a number of levels, thus allowing people to literally go through thousands in a matter of hours, unlike pikachu where it'd take weeks to see the same amount.
Shiny ekans/sandshrew is probably the hardest new shiny to get, but even that I don't think is quite as rare as pikachu.

what Mysticman89 said,
Pika appears 1% of the time and metapod appears say 50% of the time, so you are 50 times more likely to get a shiny metapod over a shiny pika when running through VF2
