i was just thinking in the early pokemon shows when James buys a golden (shiny) magikarp it evolves into a blue gyarados. shouldn't it have been red?

Didn't James buy a normal magikarp? The only shiny magikarp was in a flashback of jimmy who caught it by accident and trades it to the local fisher for a charmelion.
Edit : - episode 15 : the battle aboard the ST. Anne - episode 368 : The three animal appearances! The referee school island.

There there, you still have your imagination. Just imagine it's golden or pretend to be colourblind and every pokemon is shiny.
